McKinner’s Pizza Bar

Established in 2005, McKinner’s Pizza Bar was the next establishment we explored in Historic Downtown Littleton. Tessa had spotted it when we were out walking the area as she was looking for a pizza joint to have her 22nd Birthday dinner. Our first experience was enjoyable although a little warm because we ended up dinning alfresco on their back patio.

For Tessa’s birthday dinner we ended up ordering their Canadian pizza with a crispy cracker crust (the crust was amazing!). We added bacon and prosciutto which turned their version of a Hawaiian pizza to our version of a crispy Hawaiian pizza, one of Tessa’s favorite pizzas! Andy was on the hungry side, so we also ordered some Jalapeno Poppers as an Appetizer. If you’ve not had poppers before they are basically jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese or some variation of that. We’ve had them deep fried with a covering of breadcrumbs, McKinner’s is much healthier with the peppers baked in their pizza oven, filled with cream cheese and topic with a thin slice of prosciutto. The baking of the pepper combined with the cream cheese takes the heat out of the pepper, so it has a bit of bite but not eye watering. Mom, who doesn’t like hot things even enjoyed the poppers. I’m always a little leery of order wine in pizza bar so I stuck to water and the rest of the family ordered soft drinks. All in all, it was a delightful time and Tess enjoyed her Birthday dinner very much!

The girl’s apartment has limited air conditioning which makes cooking in the Kitchen a very warm experience, especially when using the oven. With this newly discovered pizza joint, we have decided the best way to combat the 90 + degree heat when its pizza night is to order out! We tested this theory this past Friday with a take-out order. This time we tried their Extreme pizza which included marinara sauce, pepperoni, house-made sausage, onions, green peppers, black olives, mushrooms, and mozzarella. Like last time we ordered a large ($22.50) which serves four adults with two pieces each. We again ordered it with the cracker crust.

They also offer a traditional hand-tossed, soft New York style crust as well as Gluten Free crust options. This pizza was also a winner! Both it and the Canadian are listed under the McKinners Originals on the menu.  Other options under this section include the Marghertia, Angelo, Popper, Club, PBR, Basil-Chicken, Buffalo, Barbeque Chicken, Euro Trip, and the Veggie pizza. It is going to take some convincing of my family but the next pizza I want to try is the Euro Trip which includes Spicy garlic oil, prosciutto, mushrooms, Herbs de Provence, and Mozzarella. Finished off with a toping of arugula and goat cheese! If I can’t convince them, I might have to go it alone with a small ($18.50) and they can order another McKinners Original or build their own as that too is a menu option! It won’t be as cost effective but I’m always looking for new pizza ideas and the Euro Trip sounds wonderful!
