Making Essential Oil Salt Scrubs

I love the concept of a Spa Day be it going out to a spa or creating an at home Spa Day. The nice thing about the at home Spa Day is that you can enjoy it as often as you’d like. The other thing I really enjoy is the idea of pampering oneself, either with a bar of homemade soap or a personalized salt scrub that both exfoliates and revitalizes your skin.

My good friend Laurie gave me a wonderful homemade gift a few years back that included a combination of candles and salt scrubs both of which she made herself. Since I’ve already written about making candles, I thought I’d devote this post to the ‘Making of Essential Oil Salt Scrubs’. After pampering myself with Laurie’s salt scrubs, I decided it was time I learned how to make them myself. For Christmas last year, Bella gave me all the supplies needed so I could do just that! It really is quite simple to make, all you need is the following:

  • Sea Salt (Minera Dead Sea Salt 5 lb)

  • Himalayan Salt (San Francisco Salt co – Sherpa pink_

  • 100 % pure Almond Oil (Now Solutions)

  • 100 % pure Avocado Oil (Now Solutions)

  • Variety of Essential oils (Bella gave me a beautiful box of essential oils for Christmas from Plant Therapy and then I pick up an additional set of oils ‘Flower Garden’ from Barnhouse Blue to round out my collection.

  • A container to put the scrub in (I found a lovely little jar with a cork top and little wooden spoon for about $2.99 at World Market)

To blend your salt scrub, you combine half and half of the salts in equal amounts. Add to the salt mixture half and half of the avocado oil and almond oil in equal amounts.  I found that a half cup of each salt combined with a quarter cup of each oil fills one of the World Market jars I describe above perfectly! Once you mix those four ingredients, you then add the essential oils – amounts of these oils varies depending on what you choose. I’ve enclosed a list of Essential oil combinations that my friend Laurie shared with me. The first combination is my favorite (hence Laurie’s label of ‘Kim’s Blend’.

Suggested Essential Oil Combinations:

Kim’s Blend

10 drops Lavender
10 drops Gardenia

Immune Booster Blend

3 drops Eucalyptus
3 drops Lemon
3 drops Clove
3 drops Cinnamon
3 drops Rosemary

Focus & Plan Blend

10 drops Cedarwood
5 drops Lavender
1 drop Peppermint

Mood Lifting Ginger Blend

3 drops of Frankincense
3 drops Orange
1 drop Ginger

Summer Blend

3 drops Grapefruit
3 drops Lavender
2 drops Spearmint
2 drops Lemon

Winter Blend

3 drops White Fir
3 drops Wild Orange
2 drops Wintergreen

Calming Blend

4 drops Lavender
2 drops Vetiver or Sandalwood
1 drop Clary Sage

You of course can also experiment and come up with your own blend depending on the scents you like; this is how Kim’s Blend came to be. I’m thinking my next blending session I’m going to experiment with Jasmine as I’ve always loved that fragrance in a flower, perhaps combining it with a Rose essential oil.

So, if you are feeling in need of some pampering or you are finding that the winter dryness is taking a toll on your skin, I highly recommend picking up the above supplies, many of which you can either get online on Amazon or at a local Sprouts market and treat yourself to an at home Spa Day!
